The Rift Valley forms the eastern distribution limit of the Defassa Waterbucks, which occurs in grassland and open forest and scrub all the way through to West-Africa. The species is a grazer and always found where there is water nearby. It is classified by IUCN as Near Threatened, with a total population of about 95 000. Illegal hunting and displacement due to agriculture and settlement have resulted in significant declines.
