Prevention, minimization and reuse

The waste hierarchy prioritizes waste prevention and minimization, followed by reuse, recycling, other recovery (including energy recovery) and final disposal. Improving production and design and eliminating some non-functional plastics will not be sufficient. Changing consumer behaviour is also extremely important. However, facilities are needed where “greener” products can be processed, such as recycling infrastructure and industrial composting facilities. Incentives are also needed to encourage choosing renewable alternatives, as well as reuse and repair solutions.
