Plastic packaging consumption

Plastic packaging is everywhere. It envelops many of the products we buy at the store and almost all those delivered to our front door. Since the 1950s plastic packaging has replaced paper, glass, metal and other reusable materials. It is estimated that 3.4 billion tonnes of plastic packaging were introduced into our lives between 1950 and 2017 (Geyer 2020). Plastic packaging is used in the commercial, retail, household, tourism and agricultural sectors.
