The most common marine litter items found in coastal areas are plastic packaging

Most plastic packaging is disposed of within a relatively short time and is estimated to come from household waste. Waste plastic packaging makes up a considerable portion of collected aquatic litter (15.9% in the oceans and 74.5% in rivers) (Schwarz et al. 2019).
