AFRIPAC: Effective Capacity Building for Global Plastics Treaty in Africa
Aiming to empower 5 African nations to inform negotiations for the global plastics treaty by increasing knowledge, capacity & collaboration.
INC-4, or the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, will take place in Ottawa, Canada, from 23-29 April. Representing a significant milestone in global efforts to combat plastic pollution, this session will host national governments and stakeholders from around the world to negotiate a binding agreement aimed at addressing plastic pollution.
With plastic pollution posing a severe threat to ecosystems, wildlife, and human health, INC-4 presents an opportunity for nations to come together, exchange ideas, and craft effective strategies to mitigate this pressing environmental challenge. The discussions and outcomes of this session will shape international policies and actions through a comprehensible approach, addressing the entire lifecycle of plastics, such as production, design and disposal.
Five staff members will form the GRID-Arendal delegation, to observe and support the negotiations through our current project activities, aimed at the science-policy interface of the instrument, capacity development, supporting the High Ambition Coalition to end Plastic Pollution (HAC), and addressing the topic of marine pollution and indigenous rights in the Arctic.
In preparation for INC-4, GRID-Arendal published their new report Climate impacts on Plastics, which discusses interlinkages and considerations for climate and plastics in the treaty process. Find the report here: Climate Impacts of Plastics: Global Actions to Stem Climate Change and End Plastic Pollution.
