Marine litter and plastic pollution are global issues that affect the whole world. The challenges therefore need to be solved through international cooperation and global action.
GRID-Arendal supports the development of new global solutions to combat marine litter. Through policy briefs, capacity building and awareness raising we inform policy-makers and motivate them to act. We work closely together with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), governments and organizations to support actions towards the long-term elimination of plastic into the environment.
In 2017, UNEP published “
Combating marine
plastic litter and microplastics: An assessment of the effectiveness of
relevant international, regional and subregional governance strategies and
approaches”, a report which emphasizes the lack of a global governance
framework to combat marine litter. As
a response, many countries have announced that they are looking into a possible
convention on marine litter. GRID-Arendal supports various
countries and regions with information related to international policy and
marine litter to make sure that all countries can take part in the global
discussions about our common future.
