Masai giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi), Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Giraffes were widespread and diverse in Africa and Southern Eurasia. Today they only populate different parts of South Sahara Africa, where at least 8 different subspecies are distinguished. Their colored hair patches are separated by yellow-white bands and vary in the regional variants and subspecies. Giraffes are thought to have co-evolved with Acacia trees in savanna biomes throughout Africa. Their preferred feeding is to browse on various Acacia species. Their conservation status is classified by IUCN as Least Concern. Recent population estimates indicate a downward trend from former figures of at least 100 000 individuals.
