A good toilet provides a healthy, safe and dignified place for people to relieve themselves, as well as an environmentally sound method of waste disposal. The Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) (UNICEF and World Health Organization [WHO] 2017) identifies five categories on a “best to worst” ladder of sanitation service – with ‘safely managed’ at the top and ‘open defecation’ on the lowest rung as figure shows.
