Most Arctic communities are located in coastal areas, where climate change is triggering instability and increasing hazard exposure.
The 
Nunataryuk research project aims to assess permafrost thaw along Arctic coastlines, study how it contributes to climate change, understand its impacts on indigenous communities and other people, and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. The project brings together world-leading specialists in natural science and socio-economics and connects them with stakeholders from around the Arctic coast. Nunataryuk is an EU-funded 
Horizon 2020 project coordinated by the 
Alfred Wegener Institute in Potsdam, Germany.
