AFRIPAC Plastic Material Flow Analysis

29 Aug 2025

Mitigation approaches in tackling plastic pollution need to be measured nationally and internationally. Here, we provide an open-access tool for a consolidated methodology that combines databases to support national-level Material Flow Analysis (MFA) across the plastics lifecycle, along with a comparative Indicator Development Stages Model. These tools facilitate data-driven policy and technical interventions, allowing for comparisons between different national contexts. The presented methodology integrates the open-source software STAN 2.7.101(1) for MFA and visualisation, alongside a complementary Excel template for data storage and extended analysis. The MFA collates all existing national data. The combined data is from a range of sources, which utilise unharmonized data collection methods across the economic, waste and environmental sectors of the plastic lifecycle. When more than one data source exists, a logical sequence for prioritising data is set out. The Excel tool also supports a comparable model to analyse where each country sits within the data framework. Under the support of the AFRIPAC project, we utilise Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Sri Lanka as comparative examples. Our methodology and templates are designed for use within and beyond these national contexts, and we invite others to utilise and adapt these tools to their specific needs.
