Plastic Action is Climate Action - Plastic Pollution
The exhibition 'Plastic action is climate acton' - Plastic Pollution
Sixth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA 6)
The United Nations Environment Assembly is the highest-level decision-making body on the environment. Taking place from February 26 until March 1, UNEA 6 helps set priorities for global environmental policies, develop international environmental law, catalyse intergovernmental action and contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNEA-6 will specifically focus on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, and it’s an opportunity for governments, civil society, the scientific community and the private sector to shape global environmental policy.
Five GRID-Arendal staff are attending UNEA 6, and GRID-Arendal is hosting a side event and an exhibition.
Side Event: Synergies in the governance of climate change and plastics in the context of the triple planetary crisis

Climate change and plastics are inherently interlinked, demanding coordinated, and sustainable multilateral efforts to effectively address these issues in the context of the triple planetary crisis. This side-event aims to initiate a dialogue and increase awareness among Member States and stakeholders on how existing multilateral environmental agreements such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions could cooperate with the global plastics instrument, which is presently undergoing intergovernmental negotiation. The event aims at providing streamlined actions towards achieving pollution reduction and climate goals.
Plastic Action is Climate Action Exhibition
In partnership with The Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and the University of Portsmouth, GRID-Arendal's exhibition 'Plastic action is climate action' is part of the MEA Day events at UNEA-6 from 26 February to 1 March at the UNEP office in Nairobi, Kenya. The exhibition follows the different life cycles of plastics and how these relate to climate change. We must understand the linkages between plastics and the triple planetary crisis, to search for solutions, and minimise harmful impacts on the environment and people. The exhibition aims to promote dialogue and create awareness about the interlinkages of plastics and climate change. It will include visual arts, photography, music, interactive infographics, and performance. See the publications below for relevant materials related to the plastics lifecycle stages.
