Svalbard coastline, Pilarberget at Icefjord

Pilarberget, west of Longyearbyen at the Icefjord from the air. The different geological layers (Lower Tertiary) are eroded in regular patterns. The cliffs provide breeding sites for thousands of Brünnich's guilimots and other seabirds(whitish layer). The green layer below the colonies consists of rich vegetation fertilized by the birds.
