The aim of this pilot project funded by the North Norway Regional Research Fund is to develop a shoreline map using GIS data to define coastal areas with different likelihood of accumulating beach litter. Such a map will be an important step in order to calculate the total quantities of marine litter along the coast, and it will serve as a tool in planning beach cleaning campaigns and selection of a representative locations that may be included in reporting beach litter . In this version of the pilot project will be developed maps for Lofoten. Assuming that the pilot project performs well , the approach used could be upscaled to develop a map for the whole Norwegian coast which could be made available through the map tool of miljostatus.no and Hold Norge Rent beach clean-up registration map . Such tools could also be developed to be used internationally.
