Call for Expression of Interest: Senior Specialist consulting services Ecosystem Management

GRID-Arendal is seeking a dynamic and committed Senior Specialist to support our ongoing work in ecosystem management. The senior specialist will manage and deliver on a range of ecosystem management projects focused on polar and mountain environments, blue carbon habitats and marine litter.


As a Senior Specialist, you will have the ability to both initiate and support the development and implementation of our projects in these thematic areas.


Ecosystem Management

To support its work on ecosystem management, GRID-Arendal is seeking a Senior Specialist with demonstrated experience in managing large projects related to the polar environment, blue carbon and marine litter. GRID-Arendal has a range of ongoing projects in the polar and mountain regions that relate to ecosystem management. These include projects related to the impact of climate change on permafrost in the polar region, the assessment of biodiversity and ecosystems in mountain environments, and the impact of marine litter in the polar environment. The Senior Specialist will support the delivery of these projects through contribution of expert knowledge and project management skills.


The Senior Specialist will also contribute to the delivery of projects supporting marine litter assessment and action in regions outside the polar region. This will include updating the marine litter vital graphics to reflect the current state of global knowledge on marine litter. The Senior Specialist will also support the successful completion of the GEF funded Blue Forest project. This includes the planning of the final Blue Forest meeting, planned for the first half of 2020. The Senior Specialist will lead the development of Rapid Response Assessments in the fields of permafrost and wildfires. This includes supporting fund raising activities, coordinating expert authors and overseeing production of final reports.


Principal Responsibilities/tasks

The activities of interest will be primarily in the Polar, Blue Carbon and Marine Litter include the following key areas:

  • Manage projects related to marine litter and ecosystem management, particularly focused on the polar and mountain regions
  • Finalise delivery of the GEF funded Blue Forest project
  • Engage with the Arctic Council and its working groups on behalf of GRID-Arendal
  • Provide coordination and editorial support and/or lead for Rapid Response Assessments


Professional qualifications

  • A Masters or equivalent degree in environmental sciences, natural resources management, sustainable development or related field;
  • At least 10 years' experience in the areas of polar environment, blue carbon and marine litter with established international networks in these fields;
  • A strong record of implementing and managing large, complex international projects with multiple partners and stakeholders
  • A proven record of developing projects and securing funding in one or more of the above-noted thematic fields.
  • Strong relationship with Canadian governmental agencies.
  • Extensive knowledge, experience and established relationships/networks with science, development, governmental- and intergovernmental organisations in polar regions.
  • Experience working with relevant United Nations agencies and the Arctic Council, with a specific focus on the working groups of the Arctic Council
  • Excellent writing and communication skills (English)


The Consultant will be selected based on demonstrated expertise and cost.
