About GRID-Arendal


GRID-Arendal is a non-profit environmental communications centre. We transform environmental data into innovative, science-based information products and provide capacity-building services. We aim to inform and activate a global audience and motivate decision-makers to effect positive change. GRID-Arendal was established in 1989 by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment to support environmentally sustainable development by collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme and other partners. The launch of GRID-Arendal was an outgrowth of the World Commission on Environment and Development, also known as the Brundtland Commission.


We work closely with UN agencies, regional organizations, national governments, and other strategic partners to create positive environmental outcomes and impact, particularly in developing countries. A significant focus for GRID-Arendal is supporting the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris climate agreement, and other regional and international commitments. Our work is organised into Polar and Climate, Marine Environment, Waste and Marine Litter, and Transboundary Governance & Environmental Crime programmes, supported by the Project Support Office and the Productions and Communications office.


About the position


The Waste and Marine Litter Programme at GRID-Arendal currently has an extensive and growing portfolio of projects focusing on plastic pollution, waste management and marine litter. Our projects address some of our time's most critical and pressing environmental and climate issues, including plastic waste, wastewater, solid waste management and environmental governance.


We seek a dynamic and committed colleague with proven work experience in capacity development and training directed at institutions and a solid background in plastic pollution, waste management or other environmental-related topics to increase the programme´s impact.


The position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal.


You will bring international experience and expertise in carrying out capacity needs assessments, designing capacity development plans and preparing effective training programmes in thematic areas relevant to the programme, such as pollution, marine litter, waste management, environmental management, community-based and participatory initiatives or related themes.


The position will require flexibility and commitment to supporting various long-term projects in the programme. You may also be able to lead your own projects or develop new opportunities for GRID-Arendal, utilising your existing network and developing new networks where needed.


The recruitment is undertaken in anticipation of confirmation of funding.


Main Activities


  • Work with the programme team to tailor and/or design strengthened capacity development methodologies and tools for use in the design and implementation of projects on plastic pollution
  • Guide and undertake assessments of capacity assets and needs within target institutions at the national and/or local level intending to inform the design of capacity development plans
  • Design capacity development strategies and action plans aligned with project needs and baseline assessments
  • Coordinate preparation of practical knowledge and training materials for use in capacity development activities
  • Organise capacity development activities such as workshops and pieces of training (including logistics)
  • Ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of capacity development initiatives implemented within projects
  • Establish networks and collaborate with strategic partners on capacity development
  • Represent and promote the programme at different national and international fora
  • (Co-)develop opinion papers and concept notes
  • Contribute to proposal development and fundraising
  • Other duties within the Waste and Marine Litter Programme, as identified


Professional Qualifications

  • MSc in environmental management, public administration, education, sustainable development or a related field
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in institutional capacity development in Africa, Asia and/or Latin America and the Caribbean, of which a minimum of two years should be focused on plastic pollution or waste management;
  • Excellent writing, editing and analytical skills in English are required.
  • Experience developing effective strategies, action plans and tools for institutional capacity development.
  • Personal Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the work of the United Nations (especially UNEP) and governments at the national level
  • Knowledge and experience in working on waste and marine litter issues
  • Proficiency in French is highly desirable
  • Proven ability to be flexible in a team-oriented approach with diverse groups of people
  • Capable of working in an environment with frequent deadlines, managing many tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent networking and diplomatic skills and a solid professional network
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills
