About GRID-Arendal

GRID-Arendal is a non-profit environmental communications centre. We transform environmental data into innovative, science-based information products and provide capacity-building services. We aim to inform and activate a global audience and motivate decision-makers to effect positive change. GRID-Arendal collaborates with the United Nations Environment Programme and other partners around the world.


GRID-Arendal was established in 1989 by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment to support environmentally sustainable development by collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme and other partners. The launch of GRID-Arendal was an outgrowth of the World Commission on Environment and Development, also known as the Brundtland Commission.


We work closely with UN agencies, regional organizations, national governments, and other strategic partners to create positive environmental outcomes and impact, particularly in developing countries. A major focus for GRID-Arendal is supporting fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris climate agreement, and other regional and international commitments. Our work is organised into programmes on Polar and Climate, Marine Environment, Waste and Marine Litter, and Transboundary Governance & Environmental Crime, supported by the Project Support Office and the Productions and Communications office.

Polar & Climate Programme

GRID-Arendal’s Polar & Climate Programme is seeking a dynamic and committed expert with experience relevant to the programme´s strategic priorities.


The Polar and Climate Programme at GRID-Arendal currently has a large and growing portfolio of exciting and impactful projects which focus on impacts of climate change, natural hazards, adaptation and resilience building, health and well-being, biodiversity, and pollution in the polar and high mountain regions of the world.


You will be working within a strong and pleasant international team composed of people from different cultures and from a broad spectrum of experiences.


GRID-Arendal provides you with a dynamic working environment. We are working with people across the globe in different time zones therefore some flexibility may be required in making yourself available after normal working hours. The position may require traveling.


This is full-time permanent position at our office in Arendal, Norway.


Description of work

  • Plan and lead projects within the programme
  • Provide expertise in conducting desk study researchm analysis, summarize findings, write policy-oriented papers and assessment reports
  • Facilitate relevant workshops, stakeholder consultations and similar activities
  • Provide knowledge-based information to improve environmental decision making in polar and mountain regions
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with donors and external partners
  • Contribute to the development of new projects in collaboration with other team members and external partners


Professional qualifications

  • Master degree or equivalent in environmental science, development studies or related field preferably with experience in one of the programme's work areas
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience in managing projects and delivering results
  • Developed network in one of the programmes work areas
  • Experience with managing EU projects (e.g. Horizon Europe) can be an advantage
  • Demonstrated skills in writing grant proposals can be an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills, including both written and spoken English


Personal qualifications

  • Self-motivated, passionate and dedicated to solve environmental problems and advance sustainability
  • Excellent and loyal team player willing to contribute to the positive team spirit
  • A high level of flexibility and adaptability to take up different tasks and responsibilities to ensure the Programme meets its objectives
  • Structured with an ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Excellent networking capabilities and diplomatic skills;
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work in an international and culturally diverse environment
  • Knowledge of Norwegian or other Scandinavian language would be an asset
