Mapping and Design Expert

GRID-Arendal is a Norwegian foundation, established in 1989 to support the United Nations Environment Programme. Our strength is on the translation of complex science to policy action, building global capacity for good environmental management. GRID-Arendal is seeking a mapping and design expert to join out Technology and Innovation Team. The successful applicant will work with colleagues in the team to deliver data visualizations, including maps, graphics, and visual narratives for both digital and print communication products.

Main activities

  • Contribute to the production of print and digital maps and graphics
  • Support the design and production of web based visual narratives that include maps
  • Collaborate with a creative multidisciplinary team in developing innovative communication products
  • Work on a variety of exciting and important environmental topics
  • Learn from, and grow a global network of environmental organizations
  • Make the world a better place

Qualifications and skills

  • Ability to gather and process geographic data in a variety of formats and platforms (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS, python, excel, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop to produce high quality maps and graphics.
  • Good design knowledge, including visual hierarchy, layout, colours, etc.
  • Confident in using co-creation and co-development to deliver and/or working with agile processes
  • Work well independently and in team
  • Knowledge of Norwegian
  • A structured, innovative and solution orientated mindset, with an eye for details.

It will be a benefit if you have:

  • Knowledge of other mapping software or platforms (Mapbox, D3, Blender, CartoDB, Leaflet, etc.).
  • Expertise in using and producing Story Maps using the ArcGIS Online platform.
  • Knowledge of other Adobe products (e.g. InDesign) and layout for publications.
