Associate Expert

We work closely with UN agencies, regional organizations, national governments, and other strategic partners to create positive environmental outcomes and impact, particularly in developing countries. A major focus for GRID-Arendal is supporting fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris climate agreement, and other regional and international commitments. Our work is organised into programmes on Polar and Climate, Marine Environment, Waste and Marine Litter, and Transboundary Governance & Environmental Crime, supported by a Production & Communication and Project Support Office.


We are seeking a dynamic and committed colleague with an aspiration in these topics to assist in several of our projects. You will bring your experience, energy and skills to assist with various tasks ranging from literature search and reviews, logistical support to events and/or routine reference and fact checking.

The position will require analytical skills and interest in learning about various topics relevant to the programme. It will require flexibility and commitment to support a variety of projects in the programme.


You will be working in a strong international team composed by people from different cultures and bringing together a broad spectre of experiences. GRID-Arendal provides you with a dynamic working environment. We are working with people across the globe in different time zones therefore sometimes flexibility is required in making yourself available after working hours. The position may require traveling.


Main activities

  • Assist with research and analysis of existing and emerging issues relevant to the themes of the programme (e.g., primary research support, fact checking and literature review)
  • Support communications activities for the projects (for example, draft website content, social media posts, take meeting notes, organise references)
  • Support organising workshops, meetings, capacity building and stakeholder engagement sessions both for physical meetings and meetings on electronic platforms
  • Support maintaining effective relationships with partners and funders
  • Assist in project administration and results documentation


Qualifications & Skills

  • MSc in environmental science or a related field to the topics of the programme
  • Excellent language proficiency in English (Norwegian is an advantage)
  • High level of flexibility and adaptability to take up different tasks and responsibilities
  • Proactive attitude, a strong team player, capable to work independently when required
  • Good communication and collaboration skills
