Consultant, Waste and Marine Litter Programme

To tackle the world challenge of pollution and waste, GRID-Arendal supports global policy development through the UN frameworks, including the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the Secretariat of the BRS Conventions. GRID-Arendal contributes to the UNEA and to expert working groups on waste and marine litter and develops products to inform international policy-makers. Marine litter, circular economy, waste management, waste trade, and sanitation and wastewater are topics that GRID-Arendal specializes in through research and communication services.

GRID-Arendal supports developing countries with capacity building and research on the impact of waste and marine litter, their sources and pathways. Our staff are developing technical research and communication tools and expertise to address waste and marine litter, including the leakage of plastic waste into the environment. We work closely with the Regional Seas Conventions and other UN agencies to find regional and global solutions to tackle the issue of waste and marine pollution.

In view of the expanding work under the Waste and Marine Litter Programme, GRID-Arendal seeks the services of a dynamic and committed Consultant with proven work experience and with an interest in waste and marine litter issues to increase the programme´s impact.

The Consultant is expected to bring a wealth of experience and skills to assist in project work as well as to effectively communicate new knowledge on various areas that include marine litter, waste management, plastic pollution or other topics related to the environment.

The position will require good analytical and organisational skills, and a strong talent in communication. You will be working with a strong international team composed of people from different cultures, bringing together a broad spectrum of experiences.

We work with people from across the globe in different time zones. Therefore, sometimes flexibility is required in making yourself available after working hours. The Consultant does not need to be stationed in Arendal.

The Consultancy is available immediately, and will run until 31 December 2021, with a possibility for extension.

Main activities

  • Carry out research and analysis leading to the publishing of issue briefs to help frame and inspire dialogue on source to sea issues, including:
    • Identifying and debating with peers topical source to sea issues;
    • Working with a team of authors to draft up to 5 issues briefs; and
    • Review on-going work on pollution.
  • Conduct a symposium on source to sea issues, including:
    • Preparation of symposium materials;
    • Preparation of promotional materials for the symposium;
    • Working on the logistics of running the symposium;
    • Identifying speakers; and
    • Picking up strategics considerations for stakeholder engagement at the United Nations Environment Assembly 5.2.
  • Prepare awareness raising and communication material on pollution from nutrients and wastewater; and
  • Any other business as may be assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications and Skills

Essential requirements

  • MSc in environmental sciences, communication or a related field with proven working background on topics related to pollution, marine litter, plastics and waste
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience
  • English language proficiency for both oral and written tasks;
  • Good writing, editing and analytical skills;
  • Experience in developing innovative communication products and communication services to meet the needs of a wide variety of audience; and
  • Knowledge of the environment in general, as well as capacity building and awareness raising is required.

Strongly desirable skills

  • Experience in working with the United Nations system (especially UN Environment), Norwegian government or with international development partners
  • Strong organisational skills

  • Strong, proactive and pleasant team player
  • Excellent networking and diplomatic skills
  • High level of flexibility and adaptability to take up different tasks and responsibilities
