Date: December 2, 2021
Time: 14:00 Oslo time
The need for concerted international action on plastic pollution has gained increasing urgency over recent years. Yet, the informal recycling sector received rather limited attention in this process. Estimates suggest that 58% of all recyclable plastic waste globally is collected and handled informally. Despite its significance, knowledge gaps exist on the informal sector’s scale, collection capacity, network structures, as well as on the socio-economic aspects of its workers. A holistic understanding of the informal recycling sector and its characteristics across national and international contexts is crucial for the development of an international agreement on plastic pollution.
This webinar brings together international experts on environmental treaties, civil society organizations such as waste picker associations, private sector actors, as well as academics, to address key aspects for a forthcoming international agreement. These include:
• The potential for incorporating the informal sector in a global agreement
• Experiences with designing frameworks and policy tools that are inclusive of the informal sector
• Data and methodologies to incorporate the informal sector in a circular economy
As part of the programme, the newly established International Knowledge Hub Against Plastic Pollution (IKHAPP) will be launched. The International Knowledge Hub Against Plastic Pollution is a multidisciplinary community of scientists and experts working to address global plastic pollution.
The webinar is jointly organized by the India-Norway Cooperation Project to Reduce Plastic and Chemical Pollution in India (INOPOL) and the Asian Scientific Alliance for Plastic Pollution and Value Network Management (ASAP).
