Each year, scientists, politicians, Indigenous Peoples and students from across the Arctic and beyond gather and rub shoulders in Tromsø, northern Norway, for one the biggest events focusing on the sustainable development in Arctic - the Arctic Frontiers conference.

This year’s theme is Connecting the Arctic, and appropriately, GRID-Arendal is organizing three side events with various partners, that connect global environmental issues to the Arctic, and build on some of our ongoing work in the Arctic and in other regions of the world. All of these are events open to those registered at Arctic Frontiers:

Frozen Plastic - Plastic litter in the Arctic environment: what do we need to know? takes place on Monday afternoon and is organized jointly with Akvaplan-niva, NILU and NIVA. The event aims to provide a forum for dialog between policymakers, managers and the research community on the issue of plastic pollution in the Arctic.

Our Tuesday afternoon events focus on exploring the potential for cooperation between the Arctic and the Hindu Kush Himalayas. Between 1500-1630, the side event Can the Arctic Council model work for the Hindu Kush Himalayas? organised jointly with ICIMOD, will seek to answer that very question.

From 1700-2000, the side event Himalaya Yak and Arctic Reindeer Herders: Building resilience and cooperation, will bring together (possibly for the first time ever) yak and reindeer herders to discuss common challenges and areas for mutual cooperation. The event is organised by the Association of World Reindeer Herders, International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry, the UArctic EALÁT Institute, ICIMOD, GRID-Arendal, and UiT.
