16.4.3 Information

Detailed information on the performance of technologies, processes and equipment, with specific reference to environmental and financial benefits are the necessary first step in technology assessment and selection. Often, lack of information and understanding of skills and infrastructure required for the successful operation of systems using transferred/acquired technologies results in sub-optimal performance. Examples of information strategies include providing educational brochures, energy use feedback programmes, energy audits, and labelling programmes. Case studies in India show various efforts to organise technology users and vendors, and to collect and distribute data. These efforts have been successful and have also helped redefine the goals for technology development (TERI, 1997).
