Temporary position, GIS and Cartography Specialist

Description:

GRID-Arendal is seeking a GIS and Cartography specialist to provide research, spatial analysis, and cartography to translating complex environmental and socio-economic information into understandable, visual formats for decision makers and the general public.


This is a temporary position for one year, starting as soon as possible, with potential possibility for extension. The position is based at GRID-Arendal offices in Arendal, Norway.


The ideal candidate has experience with spatial analysis using a range of commercial and open source products and can develop engaging cartographic products, including web mapping and story maps.


The enthusiastic candidate will work with a small, but highly competent and motivated international team to identify appropriate tools and technologies to enhance the use of spatial data in supporting sound environmental decision-making.


The main activities of this position are to:

  • Support and/or lead the development of innovative spatial models related to marine litter accumulation, and other projects when required.
  • Develop high quality cartographic products
  • Develop innovative web based communication products, including story maps and interactive web maps
  • Conduct research work and support to facilitate compilation of spatial data and information projects
  • Performing other related duties as required.


Required professional qualifications

BA or equivalent/higher in spatial science, geography or similar field

Two to three years relevant working experience

Interest in environment information management and assessment

Good understanding of spatial analysis including commercial and open source GIS

Excellent communication skills, especially in the use of cartography and visual communication

  • Sound knowledge in web mapping systems and knowledge of open layers, leaflet, D3 is an advantage with experience in JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
  • Excellent language proficiency in English, in particular excellent writing and editing skills
  • Norwegian or French as additional language skills would be an advantage
  • Experience in working with the United Nations system, especially UNEP is an advantage

  • Excellent networking capabilities and diplomatic skills

Compensation:

GRID-Arendal’s salary system is linked to the Norwegian Government salary system. It is based on education and experience. Salaries are subject to Norwegian tax regulations. Insurance and personal benefits are provided in addition to salary.
