Call for Expression of Interest: Translators

GRID-Arendal is seeking to develop a roster of professional translators for reports, informational materials and other documents. It is anticipated that successful candidates will be offered a sub-contract with specific assignments and deliverables as the need arises.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in translation.
  • Experience in translating academic journals/publications on environmental issues.
  • Experience in translating for international organizations, or the United Nations.
  • Available and interested in conducting a short-term assignment.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and perfect command of the main or “target” language, which should be one of the UN official languages, namely French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or Russian.
  • Knowledge of other languages, including Norwegian, Portuguese, Indonesian or Swahili is desirable.

If you meet these requirements and have an interest in joining the roster, please submit a letter expressing your interest in providing translation services, your CV and relevant credentials to: hr@grida.no. You will also need to provide us with translation samples and your per word rate.

Meeting the minimum criteria does not automatically qualify any candidates for inclusion on the roster of translators. Also, membership to the roster does not guarantee job opportunities with GRID-Arendal.

Assignment and duration

The assignment is to translate GRID-Arendal documents and publications into the translator’s principal language (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish). Occasionally, translators may be requested to translate into other languages such as Norwegian, Portuguese, Indonesian and Swahili.

Translators should strive to make the documents clear, coherent and faithful to the original, respect established terminology (when it exists), and be readily understood by a reader of the language from any part of the world. The documents they translate cover a broad range of technical, scientific, environmental, social, economic and legal issues.

The duration of the assignments can be from a few days to several weeks, depending on the volume of materials and type of assignment.

Selection

Profiles registered in the roster database will remain active for a period between 1-3 years. Whenever relevant opportunities arise, potential candidates with the required expertise will be identified and contacted. Consultants will be selected based on a mixture of skills and cost.

Fees

Fees are based on the type of assignment, complexity, extent and degree of expertise required. Detailed information on the fee shall be agreed in the contract.

Application

Responses to this call for Expression of Interest should include the following:

  • A brief cover letter, including relevant experience and any information about availability
  • CV (including contact details of at least 2 referees for which similar work has been undertaken)
  • Fees: The consultant should identify their hourly rate (which would be valid for any assignment entered into within the next 12 months)

For further information, please contact: Janet Fernandez Skaalvik, Head of Communications, janet.skaalvik@grida.no, +47 41499472.

We thank you for your interest.
