Call for Expression of Interest: Mami Wata- and ResilienSEA Communications officer

GRID-Arendal is seeking an experienced communications officer to undertake the regional strategic planning and implementation of communications activities for the Mami Wata and the ResilienSEA projects. This person will work under the supervision of the project managers in Arendal, Norway, and in close consultation with the projects’ coordinators and team in Abidjan, Côte d´Ivoire and Dakar, Senegal, respectively.


The position is stationed in Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire), with a duration of two years.


The Mami Wata project

The marine and coastal environment of Western, Central and Southern Africa is particularly rich in terms of productivity, biodiversity and ecosystem services provision, but at the same time under significant pressure from multiple human activities including fishing, energy, pollution and infrastructure development. Mami Wata will provide technical and institutional, training-of-trainers and peerlearning based capacity building for national planners and decision-makers dealing with marine and coastal management, across relevant sector ministries and government agencies and in collaboration with existing regional Centres of Expertise. The ResilienSEA project

Seagrasses are one of the ocean’s most important habitats, serving as nursey and feeding grounds, protecting our coastlines and storing carbon, among many other benefits. They are also one of the world’s least known ecosystems, and in dire need of protection. ResilienSEA will bring together managers and researchers to gather data and create national and regional expertise within West Africa, resulting in the ability to enact positive change for these habitats through scientific research, capacity building, advocacy and policy development. The project is active in seven countries in the region, Mauretania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Cabo Verde. Main objectives and responsibilities:

The communications officer will be responsible for the communications activities of the Mami Wata and the ResilienSEA projects within the Abidjan Convention region (West, Central and Southern Africa), and will contribute to the successful implementations of communications activities in collaboration with the wider project teams, including the teams of Mami Wata Pilot Projects, and ResilienSEA’s countries.


Tasks include:

  • Develop, in conjunction with the larger team, the strategic communications plans for the Mami Wata and ResilienSEA projects tailored for the Abidjan Convention Region and relevant stakeholders and audiences, supporting the achievement of the project’s objectives
  • Finding stories and generating compelling content that illustrate the objectives and impact of the two projects within the region
  • Develop innovative communication products for the relevant audiences and stakeholders;
  • Liaise with stakeholders on communications aspects of the Mami Wata and ResilienSEA projects in the region
  • Oversee the development of of advocacy and communication materials ( films, videos), including in focus countries
  • Coordinating social media, newsletters and other online outreach activities for the Mami Wata Project and the ResilienSEA project
  • Liasion with local or national media, particularly in focus countries
  • Writing or facilitating the contribution of press releases, media advisories, op-eds, blogs and other media-related content for the Mami Wata Project and ResilienSEA project
  • Managing media (including social media) monitoring and reporting to track opportunities and impacts of communications activities


Required qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or similar field
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a communications and advocacy work
  • Excellent language proficiency in French and English, in particular excellent verbal writing, and editing skills


Experience/Personal skills:

  • Experience with communicating environmental and/or development topics, with experience in developing and implementation of communication strategies
  • Experience in working with the United Nations system, especially UN Environment is an advantage
  • Ability to pursue multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and consistently meet deadlines
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work under changing priorities on multiple deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in an international and culturally diverse environment
  • Excellent team player, good networking ability and diplomatic skills


Duration: October 2018-September 2020 (24 months)
