Khatanga, Taymyr, Russia

Khatanga is a rural locality (a selo) located on the Khatanga River, on the Taymyr Peninsula, in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, south of the Arctic Ocean. It has been the starting point of the first German-Russian biological expedition in 1989 and hosts the headquarter of the Taymyrski Nature Reserve (Zapovednik). Population: 3,450 (2002 Census). The name Khatanga means "large water" in the local Evenki language. The locality is known to have existed since the 17th century. It is served by the Khatanga Airport (to the left on the picture).
