Knot (Calidris Canutus), Föhr, Germany

The Red Knot or Knot in Europe is a shorebird which breeds in the far North of Canada, Europe and Russia and of which there are 6 recognized species. Their diet varies according to the season and they often breed in glacial gravel or marshy slopes. During breeding season they rely heavily on the unique High Arctic vegetation, the only food available before insects become abundant.
