Wind and moth-shaped trees, Tromøy, Raet National Park

The wind and moth-shaped coastal forests on the island of Tromøy are a specific feature of Raet national park. Two botanists from Germany, Dr. Lebrecht Jeschke and Prof. Hans-Dieter Knapp, uncovered the secret behind the sculpture-formed pine trees. They believe that the unusual shape of the trees are caused by the pine shoot moth (Rhyacionia buoliana) having observed the moths lay their eggs on or near buds mkaing the tree grow into strange shapes.
