External Institutional Framework:
Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and
Environmental Monitoring
Institution type:
Governmental sectorial [29145]
Funding sources:
Core financing from the state budget allocated by
the Russian Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring
Description:
Main trends of activity:
- research on evaluating the state of environment and pollution, anthropogenic impacts on climate and nature, forecasts of climate and environmental changes.
- scientific and methodological guidance and analytical support of the federal monitoring network;
- collection, processing, storage and publication of data on pollution of the environment and objects;
- creating databases and banks for analysis of the state of environment, scientific support of research projects, preparation of guidelines and data exchange including international exchange.
The Institute staff is 400 researchers including corresponding members and academicians, professors, doctors and candidates of scienses and specialists in various sciences: geography, geophysics, biology, climatology, mathematic modeling of natural processes, computer science, etc.
Arctic involvement:
Measurements of atmospheric air pollution and
precipitation at a chain of stations; studies of
pollutants transport to Arctic regions; creating databases on Arctic measurements and statistic data massifs on anthropogenic impacts in Arctics.
On the request of Russian State Committee for
Hydrometeorology the Institute fulfills in 1993-
1995 a project on "Monitoring of air pollution in
Arctics based on the Danube background station" and Russian-Canadian project on background monitoring
of atmospheric pollution in Syberian sector of Arctics.
On the request of the Security Council at the
President of Russia the Institute fulfills in 1995
a project on "Studies of environmental safety
issues in Arctics"
Major information sources:
Creating databases on atmospheric pollution in
Arctics. Available at the Institute are scientific
reports and major publications of the Institute researchers on Arctic studies.
Publications:
Since 1981 the Institute is publishing an annual "Review of background state of the environment in
Russia and CIS" (before 1992 - USSR) with materials on environment pollution in Russian Arctics. Within its framework a separate section was prepared on
"Characteristics of environmental pollution in
separate regions: 8.3. Arctics", - /Review of
background state of the Environment in the USSR in
1986 - Moscow, 1987, p. 186-215.
Published were the following articles and
presentations at international conferences:
