ARENDAL, 7 May 2002: Arendal received an important boost today as a centre for international education with the assigning of the Arctic University's new director, Lars Kullerud from GRID-Arendal. The announcement is strengthening Arendal as a coming United Nations university city as well as pin pointing the city as an international focal point for Arctic knowledge.

The announcement was made today at a ceremony held at GRID-Arendal offices, and included new Arctic University director; Lars Kullerud, managing director of GRID-Arendal; Svein Tveitdal, the mayor of Arendal; Alf-Eivind Ljøstad, and vice rector of the lappland University at Rovaniemi, Finland, dr. Juha Pöyhönen.

"The Arctic University is an important partner to us and we are happy to contribute to the work of the university. We hope to continue our rewarding work with Lapland University, the city of Arendal and Lars Kullerud.

Mr Kullerud is a leading Arctic expert with many years of relevant experience and I am confident that he will be a huge benefit to the Arctic University," Svein Tveitdal, Managing Director of GRID-Arendal said,

Thirty-four educational institutions in the Arctic regions are collaborators to this 'university without walls', which is strongly supported by the governments of the Arctic Council member states. The Arctic University was officially launched in June 2001 in Rovaniemi in conjunction with the first celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Rovaniemi process and the first meeting of the Senior Arctic Officials under Finland's chairmanship.

"I have personally invested considerable effort in promoting the Northern Dimension as a policy in Finland and, most notably, the European Union. I strongly feel that the Northern Dimension should also encompass the whole of the Circumpolar North. The University of the Arctic provides us with a clear and concrete enough project for building capacity in the northernmost regions of the world," Paavo Lipponen, the Prime Minister of Finland said in a letter to UNEP's executive director explaining the importance of the University of the Arctic and the new collaboration with UNEP.

.Last week professor Oran Young, Chair of the Arctic University Board of Governors.
said: "The appointment of Lars Kullerud as Director of the Arctic University is a major milestone in the growth of the University of the Arctic. I am particularly pleased that we have succeeded in working out and agreement with Mr. Kullerud to maintain his base of operations at GRID-Arendal. We look forward to a fruitful relationship with colleagues in Arendal and with the UN system more generally."

Mr Kullerud will manage the university from the GRID-Arendal location at Longum Park in Arendal.
