The GRID-Arendal Polar programme co-hosted a workshop on Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) in Moscow, February 1-3 2005.

The workshop, which was chaired by RAIPON and the Saami Council, and in close cooperation with GRID-Arendal (Tiina Kurvits and Thor Larsen), was a success.

There were some 40 people at any time, representing RAIPON,  the Saami Council, other representatives of indigenous peoples from several Russian regions, MNR, local authorities, oil industry, universities in Norway, Finland, Germany and in Russia, University of the Arctic, three representatives from Africa, plus participants from UNDP, and more.
The workshop agreed that the time has come to test co-management and CBNRM via a pilot project in a selected area in the Russian Arctic, preferably within one of ECORA's three model areas.
