South Polar Skua (Catharacta maccormicki), Antarctic Peninsular

Year: 2011
From collection: Antarctic biodiversity
Taken by: Peter Prokosch
The South Polar Skua, which breeds in snow-free areas of Antarctica, sometimes associated with penguin rookeries, looks very similar as the Great Skua of the Northern hemisphere. The species is pelagic in the Southern winter and feeding at sea. It winters as far North as Greenland, where it could be mistaken as Great Skua.
