The Tsimanampetsotsa National Park with its salt lake and dry spiny forests comprises 430 km2 and has been protected since 1927 due to its biological meaning (high endemism of species). The lake was protected because of its international importance as the first Ramsar site of Madagascar. Salt-tollerant Salicornia vegetation is found on the shallows of the salt lake.
