Polar Bear (Ursus Maritimus), Svalbard
Year:
2010
Taken by:
Peter Prokosch
Polar Bears do most of their hunting on the sea ice. They feed almost exclusively on ice-living Ringed or Bearded Seals and the ice sheets under which these seals live and the Bears must follow the ice as it retreats into Fjords and Bays in the Summer months. Bears that find themselves trapped on land as the ice shelf retreats in Summer can face months of starvation. These animals will turn to other sources of food when pressured in this way, for example, humans.
