The Madagascar Plover (Charadrius thoracicus), with possibly less than 1000 birds remaining belongs to vulnerable endemic species of Madagascar. One of its strongholds is Lake Tsimanampetsotsa. The Tsimanampetsotsa National Park with its salt lake and dry spiny forests comprises of 430 km2 and has been protected since 1927 due to its biological meaning (high endemism of species). The lake became protected because of its international importance as the first Ramsar site of Madagascar.
