Inquisitive Polar bear on the pack ice, Svalbard
Year:
2010
Taken by:
Bjorn Alfthan
Svalbard's polar bears belong to the Barents Sea population, one of 19 different polar bear populations recognised by scientists. Svalbard's population, estimated in the several thousands, is the only one not hunted within the Arctic. The young bear pictured here on the pack ice north of Svalbard, held his head up into the air to catch the scent of the cruise ship and the tourists on board.
