Hummingbirds are among the smallest birds and exist only on the American continent, including the Caribbean. Here in the rainforest of Costa Rica, there are reported to be over 50 different hummingbird species. The birds feed off nectar, and their bills have evolved perfectly to extract nectar from long, tubular flowers. Hummingbirds need a lot of food, and a hungry bird might visit between 1000 – 3000 flowers per day, making it a key pollinator species.
