Alkaline or freshwater lakes in Africa serve as the main habitat for breeding populations (total African population estimated to be up to 75 000 pairs) as well as for wintering populations of the Great White Pelican from Eurasia. Concentrations are found at the Kenyan salt lakes in the Rift Valley, where they feed on larger fish. Estimated daily food requirement is 900-1200g. Normally feeds in groups, often co-operativly.
