Antarctic Tern (Sterna vittata)
Year:
2011
Taken by:
Peter Prokosch
The Antarctic tern is the most common tern species in Antarctica, nesting on most of the sub-Antarctic islands. They breed in November-December and are like the specimen on the picture in breeding plumage and that way can be distinguished from the similar Arctic tern, which comes all the way from the Arctic to winter in the very South, but appears there in winter plumage.
