Coastal environments and Biodiversity Coastal environments and Biodiversity
The coastal and underwater environments of Vanuatu harbours some of the most stunning dive sites in the Pacific Islands. Vanuatu's marine biodiversity is threatened by over harvesting of fish resources and water pollution, which is a serious issue especially in Port Vila harbour due to poor sewage and a spike in population in recent years. This delicate environment is highly vulnerable to storm surges and a rising water level due to the many low coastal roads and villages.
