16 September 1998 - As a part of the Baltic region BALLERINA initiative (http://www.baltic-region.net/), a group of 13 participants from the three Baltic States is currently learning how to put environmental and sustainable development information on the web. In the period 10 - 18.

A group of 13 persons from the Baltic states participating in a workshop at GRID-Arendal

September they take part in combined training course and workshop organised by GRID-Arendal, Norway, with the Eastern European program of the Swedish EPA as sponsor. The group represents a mix of NGOs, national ministries and agencies. The participants have been accepted to the workshop based upon proposed projects, that they will start upon during the course/workshop, and complete by the end of the year. Examples of on-line information resources that will result from this activity are:

- considerably improved Ministerial web sites in Lithuania and Latvia,
- an on-line version of the recently published Baltic States State of Environment report,
- an environmental atlas of Latvia, and
- the current status of the participation in a large number of international conventions, IGOs and NGOs by the Nordic and Baltic Sea region countries.

The use of the Internet as an tool to increase access to environmental information has been underscored in both Agenda 21 and the recently signed Aarhus Convention on Access to Environmental Information. The BALLERINA initiative addresses this on the Baltic regional level. The overall aim of BALLERINA is to contribute to the sustainable development of the Baltic Sea Region environment, by improving the availability and accessibility of relevant Internet-based information for decision-making at all levels.

The intent is to organise a similar activity next year targeting NW Russia and Belarus, where the availability of environmental information on the Internet is the lowest within the Baltic Sea Region
