Bankers met in Asia to discuss the environment

9 February 1998 - Senior executives and experts from 80 Asian financial institutions held a two-day United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Roundtable on Finance and the Environment in Singapore.

The meeting focused on the relevance of the environment for the financial services sector and discussed subjects such as credit risk management in the Asian Region, financing environmental investment in Asia, an Asian perspective of eco-efficiency, and risk management tools for wholesale finance.

Financial institutions from all over Asia was represented by the Asia Development Bank, ABN AMRO (Singapore), Bank of India, China Construction Bank, First Commercial Bank (Singapore), and the Indian Bankers' Association.

"Banks in Asia are waking up to the idea that the environment can impact positively on the bottom line," said Dr. Lohse from the Deutsche Bank Singapore.
