UNEP hosts third global training programme in environmental law and policy

Nairobi, 17 September - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is hosting a three-week Global Training Programme in Environmental Law and Policy from 22 September to 9 October 1997 here in Nairobi.

The Training Programme, which is being attended by 35 participants from as many countries worldwide, has been designed to familiarize them with legal and institutional developments in the field of environmental law at the national, regional and global levels. The programme will explore various avenues of using environmental law as an instrument for implementing policies for sustainable development.

Participants in this programme, who are government lawyers and policy makers from developing countries and those with economies in transition, will get an opportunity to share their unique experiences and exchange information in the development and implementation of environmental law.

The agenda for the training programme covers a wide range of environmental issues and will be facilitated by specialists in the field of the environment, including representatives of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Other facilitators will be the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat), staff from UNEP substantive and regional offices and national and local government officials from Kenya.

UNEP's Environmental Law and Institutions Programme Activity Centre (ELI/PAC), which is hosting the training programme, plans to compile a report which will include country papers submitted by the participants and presentation outlines prepared by resource persons. It is hoped that this report will serve as an important tool for trainees, lawyers and policy makers working in the field of environmental management.
