Nairobi, 3 February 1997 - In November 1995, as a response to the serious environmental degradation of coastal areas, associated river basins and the open oceans by human activities on land, governments adopted the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA).
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was unanimously designated as the GPA Secretariat, and to facilitate its implementation at the national, regional and global level, an Interim Coordination Office was established within UNEP’s Water Branch.
To allow for wide dissemination of information regarding the GPA and its implementation, UNEP has established a specific homepage on the World Wide Web (WWW) with the objectives of:
Raising awareness on the GPA; and
Facilitating access to the GPA information clearing-house.
The GPA clearing-house is a referral system through which decision-makers, the general public and other interested parties, are provided with access to current sources of information and expertise relevant to GPA issues. It is a joint effort by UNEP, in partnership with WHO, IAEA, FAO, IMO and other relevant organizations.
The GPA home page can be accessed by pointing your browser to the UNEP homepage (http://www.unep.org) and then clicking on GPA.
