Borge Brende launched the GRID-House in Arendal

Arendal, September 2, 2003 - The Norwegian Minister of Environment Borge Brende, today launched the GRID-House in Arendal. GRID-Arendal bought the house earlier this summer and wants to convert it into an GRID-House where national and international partners of GRID-Arendal will be housed as well.

"The launch of a GRID-House in Arendal is a solid manifestation of the strong Norwegian support to the UN. I hope that the GRID-House will take part in a continuous Norwegian support to the UN system in general and to international environmental cooperation in particular. I congratulate GRID-Arendal on the day and wish you good luck on the further work," the Minister of Environment said at the launch.

When the house is renovated and ready for GRID-Arendal to move in some time next year it will contain GRID-Arendal, an official United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) centre, the Global Virtual University (GVU) and the Arctic University.

"The reason why GRID-Arendal moves to the centre of town is to profile the UN in town and in the local area. We will continue our cooperation for developing the knowledge in Arendal Knowledge Park. Parallel to this we will work to improve the visibility of the work and results of UNEP and GRID-Arendal for visitors to this part of Norway," said Leif Christoffersen, Director of GRID-Arendal board of Directors.

Mayor in Arendal Alf Eivind Ljostad underlined the history of Arendal as an international marine capital in his speech.

"The launch of the city's new GRID-House means that we, in a very positive manner, are increasing our international identity," the mayor said.

"The local and national support that GRID-Arendal has received over the years is an important strengthening of UNEP. We, in UNEP, want to thank the municipality, the regional leadership and the Norwegian government for this support", Svein Tveitdal, division director in UNEP said at the opening.
