The Earth Council, Global Virtual University and GRID-Arendal recently launched an introductory course entitled The Greenhouse Effect and Climate Change. This short-term course, based on reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is designed to provide an understanding of what the majority of the world’s scientists think about these two important issues. Prospective learners will gain a basic understanding of the greenhouse phenomenon, climate change and the position of the United Nations as well as points of view from other interest groups on these critical topics. The course is interactive, richly illustrated, avoids heavy scientific jargon, has a rich library of resources with articles, animations, videos, debates, FAQs, quizzes, easy lab-activities and weblinks. The course is self-instructional but provides students opportunities to interact with one another.
This course is of significant value to those who would like to understand the environmental challenges facing us today. Learners will be able to participate in the global debate feeling confident they understand the basics. Dr. Paul Desanker of Pennsylvania State University has lauded this course for its balanced perspective and for enabling better dissemination of information produced by IPCC and others such as UNEP.
