Progress made in negotiating global treaty on persistent organic pollutants; 121 countries participate
Nairobi, 27 March 2000 - The fourth round of negotiations on a global treaty on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) concluded on 25 March 2000, with governments reaffirming eventual elimination as the goal of the Convention and including exemptions for use of DDT in controlling malaria mosquitoes and for existing uses of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), subject to periodic review. Intensive discussions also laid the basis for deciding on technical and financial assistance at the last round of negotiations, to be held from 4-9 December, 2000 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Second meeting of parties to convention on protection and use of transboundary water courses and international lakes
The Hague/Nairobi, 22 March 2000 - Determined to elaborate rules, criteria and procedures for responsibility and liability in the protection of transboundary watercourses against pollution, the Second Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes will take place from 23 to 25 March 2000 in the Hague.

Vienna convention lauded - fifteen years after signature
Nairobi, 21 March 2000 - Wednesday 22 March, marks the fifteenth anniversary of the adoption of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. With the adoption of that Convention, the foundation was laid for concerted efforts to protect the ozone layer.

NATO confirms to the United Nations, use of depleted uranium during the Kosovo conflict
GENEVA, 21 March 2000 - The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has confirmed to the United Nations that depleted uranium (DU) was used during the Kosovo conflict. But, according to the Joint UNEP/UNCHS Balkans Task Force (BTF) the information provided is not of sufficient detail to facilitate an accurate field assessment of the environmental and human health consequences of its us at the present time.

Fourth round of talks begin on global, legally binding treaty on persistent organic pollutants
Bonn/Geneva/Nairobi, 20 March 2000 - Representatives from more than 110 countries convened in Bonn today to participate in the fourth round of negotiations on an international legally binding treaty on persistent organic pollutants, or POPs, being held from 20-25 March 2000.

United Nations Environment Programme welcomes tough stance on forest fires by Indonesian Government
Nairobi/Bangkok, 9 March 2000 - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) today expressed support for the Indonesian Government's rapid response to the forest fire emergency in Sumatra. UNEP's Asia-Pacific Regional Director Nirmal Andrews said he was concerned at the prospect of a repeat of the fires that caused months of choking haze throughout the South East Asia region in 1997 and 1998.

Joint UNEP/Habitat Mission contributes to the work of the UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination team in Mozambique

United Nations experts end survey of cyanide spill Assessment report scheduled for end-March
Nairobi/Geneva, 7 March 2000 - A team of international experts is meeting in Geneva to start preparing a scientifically-based, independent report on the environmental impacts of the cyanide spill at the site of the gold and silver producing company, AURUL S.A., at Baia Mare, Romania on January 31st.

First Japanese Financial Institutions sign up to UNEP's Environmental Statement
Paris/Nairobi, March 2000 - On 1st March, three Japanese financial institutions endorsed the Statement by Financial Institutions on the Environment and Sustainable Development - the environmental principles of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Financial Institutions Initiative on the Environment. In so doing, Nikko Securities, Nikko Asset Management and the Good Bankers Co. Ltd. became the first Japanese signatories to this Initiative. The Presidents and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the three companies attended the signing ceremony in Tokyo.
