Geneva\Nairobi, 29 May 1999 - After the return from Serbia and Kosovo of the UN inter-agency humanitarian mission, the Executive Director of UNEP and Acting Executive Director of Habitat, Dr. Klaus Töpfer, was briefed by Mr. Bakary Kante, staff member of UNEP and participant of this mission, with regard to the environmental situation in Kosovo and Serbia.

Nairobi, 21 May 1999 - The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has received funding of US$650,000 from the United Nations Fund for International Partnership (Turner Foundation), in support of a project aimed at improving the early warning and preparedness for ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) events. El Niño Southern Oscillation is a seasonal change in weather conditions resulting in drought, flood or severe storm events that are often of great severity and unseasonal to the location in which they occur.

Nairobi, 11 May 1999 - Speaking here today, Klaus Toepfer, UNEP Executive Director and Acting Executive Director of UNCHS (Habitat), said he welcomes the timely initiative by the United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, to send a humanitarian needs assessment mission to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. In support of the wider United Nations system effort in the region, Toepfer has already established a joint UN Environment Programme (UNEP)/UN Centre for Human Settlements, UNCHS (Habitat) Task Force on the Environment and Human Settlements in the Balkans.
