Nairobi/Geneva, 22 June 1998 - The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have jointly released today the Executive Summary of the "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion - 1998". It has been prepared by more than 200 scientists from around the world and was reviewed from 1 to 6 June by 77 scientists from 27 countries.

Geneva/Nairobi, 15 June 1998 - The weekend before last, there was a general referendum in Switzerland on whether genetically modified organisms (GMOs) should be banned in the country, either in research or for general release. The referendum, if passed, would have prohibited the release of such GMOs in the form of corn, soya, sugar beet or the use of GMOs in the production of vaccines.

Cologne/Nairobi, 9 June 1998 - The insurance industry has suffered from a series of "billion dollar" storms since 1987. This has led to a strong increase in claims, reduced availability of insurance coverage and higher premiums. These are some of the reasons why over 100 insurance executives and representatives of other financial institutions from more than 15 countries will meet in Cologne, Germany, from 9-10 June 1998, to discuss strategies to deal with the problem, and in particular how to improve environmental reporting standards.
