UNEP Executive Director Calls for Greater Public Access to Environmental Information
Aarhus/Nairobi, 26 June 1998- Addressing a meeting of environmental information experts here in Aarhus earlier this week, Mr. Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), called on governments to implement practical measures to facilitate greater access by the public to environmental information.

WMO and UNEP issue summary of scientific assessment of the ozone layer 1998
Nairobi/Geneva, 22 June 1998- The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have jointly released today the Executive Summary of the "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion - 1998". It has been prepared by more than 200 scientists from around the world and was reviewed from 1 to 6 June by 77 scientists from 27 countries.

Treaty talks start on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
Nairobi/Montreal, 22 June 1998- Over 100 governments are meeting in Montreal, Canada, from 29 June to 3 July, for the first round of talks on an international agreement to minimize emissions and releases of persistent organic pollutants such as DDT and PCBs into the environment.

Genetically modified organsisms
Geneva/Nairobi, 15 June 1998-The weekend before last, there was a general referendum in Switzerland on whether genetically modified organisms (GMOs) should be banned in the country, either in research or for general release. The referendum, if passed, would have prohibited the release of such GMOs in the form of corn, soya, sugar beet or the use of GMOs in the production of vaccines.

UNEP calls for rapid action on Paraguayan toxic wastes
Nairobi, 8 June 1998- In response to a just-completed interim review of the risks posed by drums of toxic wastes stored at the Port of Asunci"n, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said today that urgent action is needed to contain the environmental risks.

Guide to environment and development sources of information on CD-ROM and the Internet
Moscow/Nairobi, 5 June 1998- "The information gap regarding the quality and quantity of environmental data and information remains great between the developed and developing countries and countries with economies in transition", said Klaus Topfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), when officially launching the UNEP publication Guide to Environment and Development Sources of Information on CD-ROM and the Internet during World Environment Day celebrations hosted by the Russian Federation in Moscow.

Insurance executives discuss how to deal with consequences of climate change
Cologne/Nairobi, 9 June 1998- The insurance industry has suffered from a series of "billion dollar" storms since 1987. This has led to a strong increase in claims, reduced availability of insurance coverage and higher premiums. These are some of the reasons why over 100 insurance executives and representatives of other financial institutions from more than 15 countries will meet in Cologne, Germany, from 9-10 June 1998, to discuss strategies to deal with the problem, and in particular how to improve environmental reporting standards.
