UNEP's executive director unveils short-term action plan to contain forest fires in Indonesia
Geneva, 21 April 1998- Under the leadership of Mr. Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), fire-fighting experts from around the world have come up with an immediate, first short-term action plan to contain the forest fires still raging out of control in Indonesia's East Kalimantan province.

Fighting the forest fires - UNEP's Klaus Töpfer urges teamwork in UN response
Geneva/Nairobi, 27 March-Mr Klaus Töpfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is in Geneva today to inform the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, and the heads of all the United Nations agencies on the latest situation with regard to the forest fires currently raging in Indonesia and Brazil. He will brief them on the steps being taken to provide assistance to the two countries, before flying to Indonesia for a meeting with the government at the highest level.

UNEP's executive director appoints new members to GEF scientific and technical advisory panel

Hazardous chemicals a top priority for global environment
Geneva/Nairobi, 27 March 1998- Just days after finalizing the text of the so-called PIC Convention regulating international trade in hazardous chemicals, governments have decided to meet again in Montreal on 29 June to launch talks on a second treaty that will minimize the release of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as DDT and PCBs into the environment.

Ninety-five countries agree on the new international convention on dangerous chemicals and pesticides
Brussells/Nairobi, 16 March 1998 -After two years of negotiations 95 countries unanimously agreed on a legally binding Convention on international trade and hazardous chemicals and pesticides, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced today. Through this treaty governments honoured their commitment made at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit to negotiate a convention to curb the trade in certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides.
